THE first Avon and Somerset Constabulary Battle of the Bands competition was launched on February 4 2009 to amid the sounds of thumping bass lines and catchy guitar licks of local young rock hopefuls "The Go Pogs" and the established welsh punk pop band "My Favourite Runner Up".

Aimed at creating platforms for local police teams to interact with young people and services in their area, the competition will provide the opportunity for young people to battle it out for the chance to play live at Glastonbury Festival 2009. Youngsters aged 13 – 18 from across the Force area, can apply through the recently launched Cranium Caviar website.

Bands will submit demo CDs of their music and those short-listed will be invited to play at the district heats at the end of April and beginning of May. The winners of these heats will go on to play in the final on May 23 2009 at Bristol's Colston Hall, which will be judged by Chief Constable Colin Port, Grant Mitchell (Massive Attack) and Melvin Ben (Festival Republic).

In true X Factor style, the selected eight bands will each play a song before the judges narrow it down to a final three bands, when the real battle will commence to contend for the coveted first prize – the chance to play at the Glastonbury Festival in June. The runner's up will receive studio time to record their material and create their own CD.
